Overview
The National Park of American Samoa (NPSA) is currently seeking applicants
to fill a temporary contract positions in its marine program. This
position will perform biological science tasks related to marine resources.
Duties
Duties will include poisoning of crown of thorn starfish (Alamea), tagging
and tracking marine fish species, monitoring marine life and water quality,
maintenance and repair of boats and equipment, data collection and entry
into spreadsheets and databases, and other tasks as assigned by the Marine
Ecologist. SCUBA diving and boat driving are expected to be regular duties
but require passing the National Park Service Blue Card Certification and
Department of Interior Motor Boat Operator Course, respectively.
Qualifications
Applicants with boating and SCUBA diving experience are preferred.
Applicants must be physically fit and able to pass a dive medical exam, a
swim test that includes a 1,200 ft. swim without swim aids completed within
15 minutes, a 75 ft. underwater swim without swim aids, a surface dive to
10 ft. to recover an object without swim aids, and treading water for 10
minutes without swim aids. Knowledge of natural resource management
practices, methods, and procedures. Knowledge of marine data collection
techniques. Ability to maintain quality control and quality assurance
guidelines. Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access is
preferred.
Requirements
Employment is contingent on passing the NPS Blue Card Certification.
In accordance with Executive Order 12564, this position is a drug testing
designated position subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Employees may be required to operate a government motor vehicle as part of
official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and
again every year thereafter, employees will be required to sign an
affidavit certifying to possession of a valid driver?s license that is
current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise
disqualified in any way to prohibit the operation of a motor vehicle.
Compensation
Positions are contracted through American Conservation Experience. Pay is
$9.00 per hour with no benefits. Housing is provided. Positions are 40
hours/week for 6 month terms, with the possibility of extension depending
on need and continued funding.
